What makes a community work?
We’re excited to share Village Square, our latest experience for Minecraft Education — an adventure about democracy, decision-making and what happens when a village learns to work together.
Watch the Launch Trailer:
Players arrive in a Minecraft village with a problem. Or rather, quite a few of them.
The iron golems are rusting. Some villagers are being left out of community life. Different professions are competing over resources. And when an important vote is about to take place, several villagers are nowhere to be found.
It quickly becomes clear that building a better village will take more than fixing a few blocks.

Guided by a well-travelled wandering trader, players explore the community, meet its residents, and help them tackle the problems they have stopped noticing. Along the way, they investigate how resources should be shared, navigate a disagreement over water, make sure overlooked villagers have a voice, and discover why simply holding a vote does not automatically make a decision fair.
At the heart of Village Square is a simple idea: democracy is something you do.
Rather than learning about concepts such as participation, representation, compromise and fairness in isolation, players encounter them through problems that affect the world around them. They listen to different perspectives, make recommendations, and see how different choices shape the village.
As players complete each challenge, they collect Word Keys representing the ideas they have discovered. These eventually become the building blocks of a new Village Charter — a shared set of principles the community can use to make fairer decisions together.
And then they get to see what happened next.
The experience jumps five years into the future, transforming the village according to the decisions that have been made. Water, resources, defences, civic spaces, and even the local cat population contribute to the story.

Because communities are built from decisions. And in Minecraft, the blocks placed along the way become the foundations of the world that follow.
Village Square is available now for free in Minecraft Education.

If you place a pumpkin on top of two snow blocks, you will spawn a Snow Golem (snowman). Perfect to decorate your winter base with!
